In this article, we review the Vispring Herald Superb Divan Bed versus the Vispring Regal Superb Divan Bed to determine which of these luxury Vispring beds and mattresses are right for you.

The Vispring Regal Superb Mattress and the Vispring Herald Superb Mattress are partnered with the same Vispring Prestige Divan Base to form the complete bed in both models. You can buy these mattresses separately and put on an existing bed or slatted base. However, for the ultimate experience, we’d recommend purchasing both the mattress and the divan base, as a set (which is the most cost-effective option), as they work in unison to deliver the overall comfort and support.

Yes, artistic headboards can give a modern and funky feel to the bedroom, but if it’s an elegant hotel look you are after, you simply cannot go wrong with an upholstered headboard.

1 – Your mattress

It goes without saying that an old lumpy mattress won’t be helping you to get the best night’s rest. A good mattress has a lifespan of around 8-10 years, but unsurprisingly many of us are sleeping on mattresses much older than that. Over time mattresses begin to sag and lose their shape. With dips and lumps to contend with, it’s really no wonder we spend more time tossing and turning than sleeping.

Dustmites and allergens also accumulate in mattresses over time, so if you are struggling with allergies, asthma or any respiratory conditions, a new mattress could make all the difference. We’d recommend Hypnos or Vispring as the best mattresses for a luxuriously good night’s rest.

2 – Your bed linen

Just as with your mattress, the quality of your bed linen can also make a huge difference to the environment you are sleeping in. Cotton bed linen is best. It’s a pure, natural material that is breathable and soft on the skin. It also lasts much longer than synthetic materials.

3 – Your window treatments

How dark your room is plays an important role in how well you sleep. The absence of light sends a message to the body that it is time to rest. Light exposure interferes with the body’s internal sleep clock. Blackout blinds are a great idea and will make sure your sleep isn’t disturbed by early sunlight.

4 – Digital detox

So much has been written about the effect of digital devices on sleep. Not only do the chimes of late night texts, emails and social media posts interrupt sleep, the low-level blue light emitted by screens and mobile phones also interferes with your sleep/wake cycle. Ditch the digital devices from the bedroom and avoid using tablets and mobiles, or watching TV, at least one hour before bed-time. What can you do instead? Take a cool shower, or read a real book.

5 – De-clutter

It’s all too easy for the bedroom to become a dumping ground for odds and bits that don’t have a storage space anywhere else in the home. But, a calm, clutter-free bedroom is key to a good night’s sleep. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary. Take action and free yourself from bedroom clutter. Review storage and clear out old clothes and beauty products.

6 – Sleep wellbeing tricks

Practise mindfulness. Often the thought of not being able to sleep impacts on the ability to actually fall asleep. Notice thoughts and welcome emotions. Don’t try to push them away as that will only further fuel any anxiety. Try gentle stretching before bed.

Perhaps drink a cup of herbal tea, such as chamomile. Limit caffeine intake to morning and early afternoon. Avoid alcohol. Also, don’t go to bed hungry. It’s not a good idea to eat a large meal close to bed-time. A small sleep-inducing snack, such as a handful of almonds or a few oatcakes is fine.

7 – Routine

Sticking to the same bed-time routine and going to bed and waking up at the same time each day will help to set your body’s internal clock and should optimise the quality of your sleep. A good wind-down routine before you go to bed is a great idea.

In The Great Bedtime Report published by the UK’s Sleep Council, survey respondents reported that sleep was being affected by snoring, duvet hogging, teeth grinding and fidgeting.

And yet, a standard double bed is a mere 4ft 6in, which gives each person just 2ft 3in of space to sleep in (less than a standard single size per person). If you are constantly getting disturbed by your partner’s fidgeting in bed, space hogging or stealing of bed clothes, it could be time you considered investing in a bigger bed.

As well as the obvious benefit of having more room, here are 6 reasons why you need a bigger bed:

1. We are larger than previous generations. A global study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that nearly a third of the world’s population is overweight or obese now and it’s getting worse. If we are getting bigger (average clothes sizes also confirm that we are increasing in size as compared to previous generations), then it makes perfect sense to up the size of our beds. Quite simply, we are outgrowing the standard bed size!
2. We spend a third of our lifetime in bed so why skimp on space. By the time you are 50, you will have spent 16 years in bed! So, why not get the best quality sleep you can on a bigger and more comfortable mattress?
3. Couples sleep better in a bigger bed. It’s a fact. If fidgeting and fighting for space is a constant battle in the bedroom, perhaps it’s high time you made more room. With a larger bed, you can still spend time snuggling, but also have the space to stretch out too. With a roomier bed, you are much less likely to disturb each other.
4. According to the Sleep Council, 16 other countries boast bigger average bed sizes than Britain, including Belgium, Greece, Holland, Iceland, Finland and Switzerland. Once you’ve slept in a bigger bed on your holiday abroad, you’ll know it’s the right time to make the change to a bigger bed at home.
5. If you have kids who occasionally sneak into bed with you at night and a game of bed hopping ensues, you will already be aware that it’s time you took the plunge and bought a much bigger bed. With a king, super king or emperor bed the kids can snuggle in without it being a tight squeeze. Put an end to bed hopping and make way for a bigger bed.
6. Partner disturbance is one of the most common complaints for poor sleep. If your partner is a serial fidgeter at night and you value your sleep, you couldn’t make a better investment than upgrading your bed to a bigger size. Since we spend extra money on homes, holidays, cars, TVs and sound systems, why skimp on the investment for a new bed if it means you will reap the rewards and get a better night’s rest!

The Vispring Elite Mattress and the Vispring Traditional Bedstead Mattress are very similar models at very similar price points, but there are a few key differences which will change the overall feel and comfort level of the mattress depending on your existing base, body weight and preference.  Understanding these differences will ensure you choose the best Vispring mattress to suit you.

The Vispring Elite Mattress forms part of the core Vispring range, and when bought as a complete bed is partnered with the Vispring Deluxe Divan Base for ultimate comfort.  Whilst the Vispring Traditional Bedstead Mattress has been designed for slatted bases and bed frames.

The Construction:

Both the Vispring Elite Mattress and the Vispring Traditional Bedstead Mattress are handmade in the UK and have the same luxury British craftsmanship and engineering that is used across the complete Vispring range.  Testament to this excellent quality, all of Vispring beds and mattresses carry a 30 year guarantee against any faulty craftsmanship, so you can sleep comfortably at night knowing you have invested in a highly supportive mattress.

These two mattresses feature exactly the same vanadium steel pocket spring unit and again the same natural layers of bonded Platinum Certified British fleece wool and cotton.  The mattresses are completed with the finest Belgian Damask ticking, are hand tufted and have two rows of genuine hand side stitching for reinforced support at the borders.

The key specification difference:

The key specification difference is that the Vispring Traditional Bedstead Mattress has a wool spring protector layer built in to either side of the pocket springs.  This provides an extra internal layer to protect the upholstery and pocket springs from the wear and tear of a slatted base.  By having this additional layer in the mattress, the Vispring Traditional Bedstead Mattress comes up overall a firmer feel than the Vispring Elite Mattress, despite having the same pocket springs and choice of soft, medium and firm tension levels.

It is important to know that you can put any Vispring mattress on to a slatted base, it does not have to be a model from their Bedstead Collection, but bear in mind, any pocket spring mattress you put on to a slatted base will come up firmer than a mattress on a sprung divan base, so it is important when you are trying a mattress in a showroom that you take note of the divan base type that is being used.  If you fail to take this into account, you may not get the same comfort when you put your new mattress on to your existing divan base.

So, if any Vispring mattress can go on to a slatted base, should I choose the Vispring Elite Mattress or the Vispring Traditional Bedstead Mattress?

The answer is this – if you are looking for a slightly softer comfort level with the same excellent support, opt of the Vispring Elite Mattress as this will nestle around your body slightly more than the Vispring Traditional Bedstead Mattress.  If you are a lighter frame, you will find that the extra suppleness moulds to your body shape more giving greater comfort to your joints.

If you prefer an overall firmer feel, and are putting the mattress on to a slatted base, then opt for the Vispring Traditional Bedstead Mattress.

If you have an existing pocket spring divan base, opt for the Vispring Elite Mattress, as you will not need the built in wool spring protector pad.

Lastly, any pocket sprung mattress being put on to a slatted base would greatly benefit from using the Vispring mattress pad for slatted bases.  This is a tough, all wool (so highly breathable) layer that attaches to the slatted base and provides added protection to your pocket spring mattress from the wear and tear of the slatted base; be it from the gaps in the slats (which should be no more than 6-8cm), small splinters which can come off the slats or even moisture, undetected to the eye, in the slatted base.

The UK has seen soaring temperatures in recent weeks thanks to an unprecedented heatwave on the Iberian peninsula. It’s affecting productivity at work and it’s interfering with our sleep. If the hot weather is preventing you from getting a proper night’s rest, here are 7 ways you can try to cool down:

1 – Use cotton bedding

Having the right type of bedding can help considerably in keeping you cool in bed. Invest in high quality lightweight cotton linens for your bed, as they are breathable and won’t contribute as much to making you feel hot and sticky, like other synthetic materials do. Ditch the duvet if your bedroom is baking and just use a cotton sheet instead.

2 – Stay hydrated

It’s really important that you stay hydrated throughout the day during a heatwave. We lose a lot of water and electrolytes through sweat. Dehydration can cause headaches and contribute to sleeplessness.

3 – Take a tepid shower before bed-time

Forget about a hot bath in this weather. A tepid shower before getting into bed will cool you down and ensure you don’t start the night feeling hot and sticky.

4 – Keep bedroom curtains closed during the day

As much as it feels wrong to keep curtains closed on a bright sunny day, keeping the glare of the sun out of your bedroom will help to keep it cooler. Also, if your bedroom is generally cooler than outside, it’s a good idea to keep the windows closed during the day, otherwise you’ll be letting the heat in.

5 – Turn off all electrical items in the bedroom

Electrical items emit heat. It’s a no-brainer to keep anything emitting heat out of the bedroom. Every little helps in keeping the temperature down.

6 – Buy a fan! (and ear-plugs)

If the heat in your bedroom is unbearable, it is worth investing in a fan. While a little noisy, a fan will help to cool you down. You can always buy some ear-plugs if you can’t cope with the noise. Try putting a tray of ice-cubes in front of the fan for a cooler breeze.

7 – Cold compresses

Putting an ice-pack or a flannel that has been in the freezer for 10 minutes on pulse points can be a really nice way to cool down when you get into bed. A hot water bottle filled with iced water is also a good idea and will cool you and your bed down.

Bespoke beds since 1901

Vispring have been making bespoke beds since 1901. The Vispring journey began in 1899 in Canada when English engineer, James Marshall, pioneered individually pocketed steel springs to create a bed worthy for his ill wife. The revolutionary design was brought to Britain by John Nolan and Frederick James in 1901 (then made by The Marshall Sanitary Mattress Company). In 1911 the company adopted the Vispring name.

The name, the brand and the Vispring reputation

The name Vispring was carefully chosen to represent the fundamentals of the mattresses it represents. The Roman numeral VI is a subtle reference to the fact that six springs were at that time being sewn into each pocket. VI was combined with ‘spring’ (that bit is obvious) to create a meaningful name.

Vispring set out as the epitome of luxury and bespoke comfort. In 1912 Vispring’s mattresses were selected for the Titanic’s suites and First-Class cabins. Natural materials

From the outset Vispring insisted on using only natural materials. From 1925 Vispring included a pure cotton filling and began to expand the range of materials used. The ever more luxurious materials incorporated to this day include Shetland wool, bamboo, mohair, horsetail, silk and cashmere.

Technical sophistication

Vispring’s master craftsmen use techniques that have been refined over the course of a century. Combined with the technical sophistication of individually pocketed springs and the finest natural materials, a bespoke Vispring bed is a guarantee for sublime comfort and an untroubled night’s sleep.

Handmade to order

All Vispring beds and mattresses are made to order. Your Vispring bed will be completely bespoke from the size and tension of the mattress, through to divan height, fabric, bed legs and storage options.

Vispring are the only bed manufacturer to produce their own springs, and every mattress is given the same fine attention to detail. Each spring is enclosed in a natural cotton calico pocket to ensure excellent breathability. Pocket springs are then hand-nested in a honeycomb pattern to maximise support. The pockets aren’t glued, like many other beds, so each one can work independently, offering maximum support from head to toe.

The finest natural fillings are used in all of Vispring’s products. The highest quality horsehair from Austria is used to give Vispring beds extra resilience and comfort. If sleep deprivation is getting you down, it could be time to change your mattress. But before you make the leap from one uncomfortable night’s sleep to another, think carefully about the next mattress you buy.

The three biggest mistakes people make when buying a mattress is not to do proper research, to under invest and not to try the mattress out before buying. Purchase a cheap mattress from an online store and you could be asking for more sleepless nights.

A decent mattress should last you around 8-10 years, so it warrants a pretty serious investment. Think about it. We spend much less of our time in our car but are happy to shell out considerable sums to drive ourselves around. As we spend pretty much a third of our lives sleeping, it makes perfect sense to invest in a mattress, especially since it could make the difference between a horrible night tossing and turning or happy zzzzs.

But, be aware that price tag isn’t necessarily synonymous with supreme comfort. As well as brand, there are several factors to consider when buying a mattress, including:

• Type (open coil spring, pocket spring, memory foam, latex foam, pillow-top and hybrid)
• Upholstery (from natural, breathable fillings to synthetic, hypoallergenic fillings)
• Size (small single, single, small double, double, kingsize or super kingsize)
• Quality of pocket springs; the engine to your mattress
• Tension (Soft, medium or firm)
• Allergens
• You and your partner’s body weight and shape
• Your existing divan bed base or slatted frame

An expensive firm mattress won’t improve your sleep if you are too light for the mattress or prefer to sleep on something softer. Spend some time looking for the right type of mattress to suit you. Go to a showroom and try out some mattresses before you buy.
